Busabout hop-on hop-off European coach passes

This Europe-wide hop-on hop-off coach network is designed specially for backpackers. The Busabout network is comprised of a number of interconnecting coach routes connecting the major cities with a few out-of-the-way destinations thrown in. The network comprises travel to over 40 destinations in 14 countries.

Many of the routes only operate in one direction and may take a roundabout route to get to your intended destination and the service only runs every second day.

Although Busabout is a little too structured for many independent travellers, it is a good option for first-time travellers who may not be ready for the type of flexible travel offered by a railpass but who want a little more freedom than what is offered by a tour such as Contiki. In many ways it is similar to a Contiki tour with a coachload of young travellers looking for a good time and the itinerary has a focus on partying around Europe and you are bound to have a lot of fun and make good friends; however unlike a more structured tour, you can hop on and off the coach at stops en route (staying a week or two in your favourite city if that’s what you want) and you can choose whatever accommodation you want at the cities en route so you’re not forced into staying at Busabout’s recommended accommodation option.

The Busabout season runs from May to October. You will get the most from your pass if you start travelling at the beginning of the season, but you may be better off with another travel pass (or pre-booked individual tickets) if your trip starts towards the end of the season.

Flexi Trip

The Flexi Trip pass gives you access to Busabout’s main hop-on hop-off network. The 2016 Busabout Flexi Trip programme runs from May to October with coaches running every second day.

This pass lets you visit the following 46 destinations in 14 countries: Austria Graz, Grünau im Almtal, Innsbruck, Salzburg and ViennaBelgium Bruges; Croatia Split, Zadar, Zagreb; Czech Republic Český Krumlov, Olomouc and Prague; France Avignon, Bordeaux, Nice, Paris and Tours;  Germany Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Stuttgart; Hungary Budapest; Italy Ancona, Florence, La Spezia (Cinque Terre), Lake Como, Milan, Orvieto, Rome, Siena, Trieste and Venice; Netherlands Amsterdam; Poland Krakow, Zakopane; Slovakia Bratislava; Slovenia Lake Bled, Ljubljana; Spain Barcelona, Madrid, Pamplona, San Sebastian and Valencia; Switzerland Bern, Lauterbrunnen and Lucerne.

Busabout Flexi Pass route map

Although the Flexi Trip gives you access to the entire Busabout network, it is not a full access pass like the Loop Passes (more information about these below). With the Flexi Trip pass you choose a segment of the route that you want to travel by purchasing a pass for a set number of coach days. A coach day is essentially a travel day with travel between two of the overnight destinations that are marked as white dots on the Busabout route map. The coach will stop at destinations marked by black dots on the route map giving you enough time for a quick look around town, and you have the option off hopping off the coach at these cities and hopping back on another coach at a later date, but you will get better value from your pass if you only get on and off the coach at the designated overnight stops.

The basic Busabout Flexi Pass is good for six coach days but it is also possible to buy a more comprehensive pass valid for seven, eight or nine coach days.

Busabout Loop passes

These passes are an ideal if you have limited time in Europe and want to focus on travel in a specific region and also suit first-time travellers on a longer trip who want a soft landing with the semi-organised nature of a Busabout trip before continuing on the rest of their travels with a more flexible travel option such as a railpass.

The Busabout network is split into four Loops: North, East, South and West. Each loop is essentially a coach route taking in part of Europe and each route has a couple of overnight stops where you are able to transfer to a different Loop. You can buy passes for one, two, three or four of each of these routes.

A single Loop pass is ideal for exploring a specific region and many travellers will combine a single Loop pass with a rail pass, which gives you a soft landing into Europe before travelling more independently with a rail pass or rental car.

Two and Three Loop passes let you design your trip by buying just the passes you need to explore the parts of Europe you plan on visiting without paying extra for travel to parts of the continent you have no interest in.
